Triage

Triage is designed to make rapid assessments of young people and to assist in the decision making process as to whether they need to enter into the criminal justice system...

The main aim is to reduce the number of young people entering the Youth Justice System for low level offences. Triage does this by diverting them into positive activities and mainstream services at the earliest opportunity. Triage will also ensure that the support needs of the victims and witnesses are met.

In order to offer this service, there needs to be a member of the YOS staff available to attend a police station at any time an eligible young person in custody and is awaiting disposal. This can often mean attendance is required outside of normal working hours to complete the initial Pre Onset assessment.

This innovative scheme is part of the YCAP, and seen by the YJB as an excellent way to reduce first time entrants to Youth Justice System and also improve partnership working.

T.A.A.S can provide the YOS with a specially trained triage worker to complete this role, which will provide invaluable support to YOS teams, and help them meet YJB performance and National Standard requirements.

TAAS will

  • Ensure a specially trained worker is present within 1 hour of the request any time day or night
  • Complete a Pre Onset assessment on the young person to assess suitability for the scheme.
  • Give the young person their first appointment with the YOS within the initial bail period
  • Ensure all paperwork is sent to the YOS within 12 hours
  • We can even enter all the information required onto YOIS

As this is yet another one of our innovative Pay as you go service which means that you only pay for the service when you require it but the young people that are suitable for Triage are identified and your target figures are reached.

We have a bank of specially trained staff ready to undertake this work
